Funeral for Herbert Alton Bartlett, 79, formerly of Hartselle and Centre, will be Thursday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with the Revs. Harold Thompson, Clint Busler and Robert Sparkman officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Fort Payne at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Hazel officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Bartlett died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, in Tucson, Ariz. He grew up on a farm on Sand Mountain with siblings, Grace Bartlett Whitt, Rev. Shelton Bartlett, the late Joyce Bartlett Milwee and Elise Bartlett Traylor. Upon graduating from Sardis High School in 1943, as senior class president, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy in WWII. He served in the Pacific Theatre as a Signalman Second Class aboard the U.S.S. Crenshaw.
Mr. Bartlett was in the banking field for 40 years. Along with five other men, he helped organize American Bank and Trust of Hartselle in 1965, serving as its president. The late Ollie Camp was chairman of the board and the late James Stephenson was a director. The bank merged with First Alabama Bank of Montgomery, which later became Regions Bank. He also served as vice president of Colonial Bank of Hartselle.
He served in many civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club of Hartselle and the Community Relations Association of Morgan County. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Tucson.
He was married to the late Sarah Callaham Bartlett. Their children were the late Sarah Jean Bartlett and Herbert Alton Bartlett Jr. of Hartselle. He also married Peggy Black Bartlett. Their children are Solane Bartlett Thomas and husband Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Janet Bartlett Waugaman and husband Donald of Tucson, Ariz. Grandchildren are Nicholas Bartlett and Megan Bartlett, both of Hartselle, Hayden and Justin Thomas and Andrew and Hailey Waugaman.
Pallbearers will be Herbert Bartlett, Nicholas Bartlett, David Whitt, Daniel Whitt, Michael Whitt and John Traylor.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Fred Sherrill, Dr. Robert D. Sittason, Howard Fowler, Paul Lee, Charles Quinn, Franklin Stewart, Richard Lyons and Charles Reid.
Memorials may be made to the local chapter of the Alzheimer Association, Cancer Society, or the church fund of your choice.
