The city of Hartselle kicked off its month-long United Way fundraising campaign Aug. 25 with a lunch plate sale sponsored by the Hartselle Public Works Department.
Wayne Jones, Public Works employee, cut and barbecued more than 200 cuts of pork tenderloin and made 65 pounds of potato salad and several gallons of iced tea and lemonade for the event. Plates also featured baked beans and bread and were sold for $5 each with proceeds totaling $1,185 donated to the United Way.
City of Hartselle, Hartselle City Schools, Hartselle Utilities, Hartselle Parks and Recreation, Volunteers of America, Hartselle Medical Center, Mayfield Trucking, Hartselle Fire and Rescue, Hartselle Police Department, Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce and SouthTrust Bank employees and members, along with many others, pre-ordered the plates. Extra plates were sold to hungry passersby.
June Asher, Sherry Pentecost and George Pollitt of the United Way attended the event, held at The Depot, and enjoyed lunch with Mayor Dwight Tankersley, council members, chamber members, city employees and members of the Hartselle community.
Those helping to fix to-go plates included Hartselle firefighters, police and city employees. The city's annual United Way fundraising campaign will continue through the month of September.
