Game notes for Week 5

Hartselle vs. Decatur

Series record: Decatur leads 54-19-1 (according to Alabama High School Football Historical Society)

Last year: Decatur won 20-14

Stingy Hartselle Defense: The Tigers have only allowed 3 points through the first four games of the season for an average of 0.75 points per game. That’s the best of any AHSAA team to this point. The next closest teams are Brantley with 13 and a three-way tie with 14 with Linden, Piedmont and Vigor. Vigor is 3-1 losing to Davidson 14-13 in Week 2.

Morgan County’s oldest rivalry: Although Austin is Decatur’s crosstown rival, Hartselle has actually played Decatur more times. According to AHSFHS, Decatur and Austin’s first meeting was in 1965 while the first Hartselle vs. Decatur game on record was played in 1924. Hartselle won that meeting 6-0.

Danville at Priceville

Series Record: Danville leads 4-3

Last year: Danville won 69-42

Surprising Priceville: The Bulldogs are off to their first 2-2 start since Donald Weeks’ first season in 2006. They just missed the playoffs that year. The Bulldogs’ best season was the school’s second season when they went 6-1, but they were not eligible for the playoffs that year.

Danville heartbreak: The Hawks played their best game of the season so far in a 10-8 loss against Colbert County. Danville struggled the first three weeks against good teams in Class 2A and 3A. However, the Hawks have only scored 14 points this season. Last year, Danville averaged 28 points per game.

Brewer at Columbia

Series: Columbia leads 1-0

Last year: Columbia won 39-27

Brewer showing improvement: The Patriots had their best offensive output of the season against Mortimer Jordan last week, scoring 20 points. In the first three weeks, they scored just 13 points. The four teams they have played have a combined record of 12-4.

Columbia struggles in 5A: Columbia won its first game against 4A DAR 40-7, but they have been outscored 132-6 since then in Class 5A, Region 8.

Westminster Christian at Falkville

Series: Westminster Christian leads 1-0

Last year: Westminster Christian won 49-0

Rare region game in Week 5: Usually, teams play non-region opponents in Weeks 1, 5 and 10, but not so in Class 2A, Region 7. There are nine teams in the region, meaning teams play eight region games and two non-region games. Falkville’s only non-region games are Week 8 (Brindlee Mountain) and Week 10 (Danville).

Tough competition for Falkville: The combined record for the Blue Devils’ opponents is 11-5. Tanner is unbeaten at 4-0 while Sumiton Christian and Oakman are both 3-1.
