Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
Hartselle High senior Dennis Smith has committed to wrestle at Cumberland University in Clarksville, Tenn.
Smith will join his Tiger teammate Kurt Hamilton, who also committed to wrestle at Cumberland.
Smith plans to major in education and hopes to pursue a career in coaching. Smith will sign his scholarship in January.
"Cumberland is an up and coming wrestling program," Smith said. "I wanted to be part of building something."
Smith and Hamilton both liked the idea of wrestling at the same college.
"We discussed it, and we thought it would be a good idea to attend the same college," Smith said.
"We like the idea of staying teammates after high school."
Smith, who compiled a 37-12 record in 2004, finished as runner-up in Class 5A state championships in the 140-pound weight class as a junior.
He has helped Hartselle win three straight North Sectional championships, 2001-03.
