DHS improves in second scrimmage

Danville coach Scott Curd saw much improvement in his team’s scrimmage from week one to week two.

In particular, he was pleased to see the lack of turnovers on offense.

“I thought we had a lot of improvement from the first scrimmage on Aug. 5 to the second scrimmage on Aug. 12,” Curd said. “We executed a lot better on offense and we made some plays. We definitely took some steps forward.”

Danville began the scrimmage working on goal-line offense/defense and other situational plays. It also allowed the Hawks to practice with an officiating crew. The local association of football officials used Danville’s and other teams’ scrimmages for training exercises to prepare for the year.

The team then started on the 30-yard line and ran an offensive series down the field against the defense.

The scrimmage featured some big plays on offense with long rushing and passing touchdowns. The defense also made some stops near the goal line.

“We had some big plays on both sides of the ball,” Curd said. “You know, when your defense dominates a scrimmage, you don’t know whether you have a great defense or just a poor offense. So we really won’t know just how that is until we start the season.”

Danville will have a jamboree game at Brewer High School on Friday. Curd said the tentative starting time is 7 p.m., but it could change later in the week.

The Hawks first game will be at Colbert Heights High School on Aug. 26. The Wildcats won last year’s season opener against Danville 47-27.
