A look back

By Staff
Researched by Dr. Bill Stewart
There is increasing concern about the state of moral values.
1915-February 12, The grand jury of the Morgan County law and equity court adjourned yesterday after docketing 21 cases and finding 15 true bills. They reported that they found the moral conditions in this county most excellent.
2003 -February 13, The Hartselle police have reported two purse snatchings recently.
1920 -February 14, F. E. Burleson argued that America is declining morally in a debate tonight.
1915 -February 15, A damage suit for $3,000 has been filed in the law and equity court against the Louisville &Nashville Railroad by Mrs. Emma Sparkman for the alleged killing of her husband, Dick Sparkman, in the yards of the railroad company in New Decatur on February 16, 1914. Mr. Sparkman was run over by a switch engine.
1911 -February 16, Johnson's Chapel cemetery is to be the final resting place for the remains of Woody Kirby, a well known mechanic who was employed in the Louisville and Nashville railroad shops in New Decatur. Mr. Kirby is dead as the result of a prank on the part of a fellow workman in the shops. Mr. Kirby and the co-worker were engaged in a friendly scuffle in the boiler shop where they labored when the co-worker turned an air hose on Mr. Kirby's body. The air came out of the hose with great force, knocking Mr. Kirby down, and he was carried to the home of his cousin where he died at 6 o'clock this morning.
2003 -February 17, Rev. Walter Blackman, pastor of East Highland Baptist Church, believes that it is within the home that children are most likely to learn to make positive moral choices.
1903 -February 18, A telephone message from Moulton, Lawrence County, this afternoon says that an unknown tramp was found frozen to death near there in a fodder stack at an early hour this morning. He was of medium size and weighed about 160 or 170 pounds.
2003 -February 18, Kristine Beadle heads the North Alabama Homeschool Organization which is headquartered here in Hartselle.
