Blood supply drops

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays, many people forget to give a gift that can save someone's life. That's why LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is issuing an emergency appeal for all types of blood.
"Simply put, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to collect enough blood," Susan Stalons, branch director for LifeSouth, said. "We always struggle during the holidays because so many people are traveling and busy but this year has been especially tough. Our blood drives are coming back with less blood than we expected which means hospitals get less than they need."
LifeSouth provides blood to 11 North Alabama hospitals, including Hartselle Medical Center.
Normally, LifeSouth receives a large portion of its donations from groups, such as businesses or churches. Many of those groups are busy during the holidays and aren't able to hold blood drives.
"All of these factors, combined with the cold and flu season have had an alarming impact on donations," Stalons said.
More than 1,600 people have donated blood to LifeSouth during December. LifeSouth officials said those numbers aren't enough to keep adequate supplies at the hospitals.
To donate blood with LifeSouth, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 103 pounds and show a photo identification.
