Brewer races past East Limestone to move to 3-1

The Brewer Patriots moved to 3-1 and 2-0 in area play with a 41-16 win over East Limestone on Friday night. It is the first time since 2018 that the Patriots have started the season 3-1. It is also the first time since the AHSAA moved to region play in 2000 that Brewer has begun 2-0.

The Patriots led 14-0 at halftime and extended the lead to 27-0 heading into the fourth quarter. East Limestone finally got on the scoreboard with a safety and a touchdown to make the score 27-8 early in the fourth quarter. Brewer sandwiched two more scores around an Indians touchdown run to make the final score 41-16.

JJ Nicholson finished with a career-high 180 yards and two touchdowns, while Austyn Holmes added 95 yards rushing and two scores, along with 31 yards receiving. DJ Burney had 87 yards rushing.

Cason Oden had 127 yards passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Walker Latham had 69 yards receiving and a touchdown, while Connor Kirby had a touchdown reception.

“Every aspect of our offense and defense played well tonight,” Brewer coach Matt Plunkett said. “JJ Nicholson and Austyn Holmes couldn’t be stopped tonight thanks to the play of our offensive line.”

Brewer will host Lawrence County (2-2, 1-1) on Friday night.
