Brewer opens region play with 21-19 win at Ardmore

The Brewer Patriots improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in region play with a 21-19 win over Ardmore last Friday night. Ardmore had won the previous three games in the series.

It is the first time since 2018 that Brewer has started 1-0 in region play.

The game ended with a fourth-quarter defensive stop by JJ Nicholson and the Patriots’ defense. Nicholson sacked the Ardmore quarterback on a fourth down play to preserve the win for Brewer.

“It was a great team win,” Brewer coach Matt Plunkett said. “Our defense found a way to stop Ardmore’s 4th quarter surge and won the game.”

The Patriots scored first when DJ Burney scored on a three-yard run to take a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. However, Ardmore tied the game up with a touchdown right before halftime to make it 7-7.

Brewer extended their lead to 14-7 when quarterback Cason Oden connected with Talon Comfort for a 38-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Oden followed that up with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a 21-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers rallied in the final quarter to cut the lead to 21-19, but the Brewer defense got the game’s most important stop when needed.

Oden passed for 132 yards and a touchdown. Austyn Holmes led the team with 53 yards rushing, while Comfort led the team with 76 yards receiving and a score.

Brewer (2-1, 1-0) will host East Limestone (0-3, 0-1) on Friday night.
