Fall kickoff: A look at the Brewer Patriots

Fall camp opened this week for the Brewer Patriots.

The Patriots enter year three under Coach Matt Plunkett, who is 7-14 at Brewer and 58-53 overall in 11 seasons at Brewer, Locust Fork, Cullman and Gardendale.

They open the season Aug. 25 at Hanceville.

Until then, take a look at this year’s Patriots below and check back for a story, roster and pictures in the 2023 Morgan County Football Preview Magazine.

2022 Record: 5-6, lost in first round of the 5A state playoffs at Scottsboro

Key Returners: Walker Latham, DJ Burney, Will Clemons, Connor Kirby, Wayne Horton, Beau Yancey, Austyn Holmes, Tim Hunter, Logan Duke, Cason Oden

Key Losses: Caden Childers, Garrett Clemons, Lucas Simpson

Newcomer: Cam Ballinger

Preview: The Brewer Patriots enter the 2023 season with high hopes after making the playoffs last season. Cason Oden is replacing Caden Childers at the quarterback position but the offense returns playmakers Will Latham and DJ Burney and a very good and experienced offensive line. The defense returns starters at every level including leading tackler Connor Kirby at middle linebacker.

Coach speak: “I believe this will be one of the best offensive lines that Brewer has ever had. They are young, with four sophomores starting, but the more experience they get, the better they will be.” – Coach Matt Plunkett
