Pig Squeal Show, auction come to fairgrounds March 5

Special to the Enquirer

4-H Youth from Lawrence and Morgan counties will be headed to the Lawrence County Fairgrounds March 5 to show and auction off their project pigs.

Young people received two pigs in November 2021 and have been feeding and training them for the event. Brett Crow, County Extension Coordinator in Morgan County, said the young pig farmers have more variety to offer buyers this year in terms of breed and weight differences, so every bidder should be able to find a pig tailored to their specific needs.

During the showmanship portion of the event, youth will show off their presentation skills in age classes: Junior, 9-10-ear-olds; Intermediate, 11-13-year-olds; and Senior, 14-year-olds and older. The pigs will be shown in weight classes for the market show.

After the show, the majority of the pigs will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, while a few 4-H youth have plans to exhibit their pigs at other shows throughout the month of March.

Past auctions have had bidders who wanted the pigs, while some bidders just want to acknowledge the work that has been put into the project, and the pigs can stay with the youth.

LouAllen Processing has open slots for the pigs to be processed. Processing fees are separate from the bid price that goes to the 4-H Youth; however, delivery to the processor would be included in the purchase price as a convenience.

The event will be held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds/Moulton Lions Club at 455 School St., starting about 9 a.m. March 5. For more information, contact the Lawrence or Morgan County Extension offices: Lawrence, 256-974-2464, Melinda Smith or Marsha Terry, and Morgan, 256-773-2549, Karen Melson or Crow.
