Vets Like Us held an appreciation dinner for Gold Star Families at the beautiful Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur in the Monarch Room. The meal was catered by JW Steakhouse in Priceville and enjoyed by all attending. 

Special thanks goes out to Susie Burgess and to sponsors Sen. Arthur Orr, Rep. Terri Collins, the Morgan County Legislative Delegation, Bramlett Auto, Colors Paint and Body Shop, Traditions Bank–Priceville, Peoples Bank–Decatur, Pill Box Pharmacy, American Legion Post 15, American Legion Post 310, American Legion Post 52, Melba Lindley, Debbie Rafferty, Cindy Rains at Scruples, Academy Sports and Outdoors, Home Depot and O’Charley’s. All helped to make this event successful. 

A special shout out goes to Judy Little and Marilyn Volonino from American Legion Auxiliary Post 15, who were greeters and made sure everything ran smoothly.  

Another big shout out goes to Gov. Kay Ivey, who sent the Vets Like Us organization the nicest letter and asked that they keep her in the loop on what all they do to help veterans and educate communities.

Congress passes Labor Day Act In 1894 

Members of Congress passed the Labor Day Act in 1894, making the first Monday in September a national holiday. American labor has raised the “nation’s standard of living” and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known. 

The labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.  

Therefore, it is appropriate that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creators of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom and leadership: the American workers.  

Area Church Activities 

The members of New Life Church on West Lacon Road in the Fairview community hosted their Fifth Sunday Night Singing Aug. 29. Eight area churches enjoyed participating in the singing.
