American Legion post announces scholarship winners

Special to the Enquirer

The 2021 John F. Thompson Post 52 Scholarship recipients have been announced.

Graduating high school seniors Bayleigh Kyker, Caleb Simmons and Cana Beth Waynick will each receive $1,000 for use at the university or technical college of their choice.

They were selected for their academic achievements, participation in school extracurricular activities and community involvement. Each applicant was also required to submit an essay relating to the military service of their parent or grandparent.

“The process of narrowing down a large applicant pool is a challenging one, especially when it is composed of so many qualified and deserving candidates,” said Post Commander Michael Ferguson. “Our Scholarship Committee did an outstanding job in their evaluations, and I congratulate both the students and parents on receiving this award.”

All three scholarship winners are students of Hartselle High School.

Kyker and Waynick both plan to attend the University of North Alabama, while Simmons plans to attend Jacksonville State University.

Chartered by Congress in 1919, the American Legion is a non-profit organization of U.S. military veterans. The Legion is nationally known for providing assistance and guidance to veterans and military personnel, as well as sponsoring community programs such as American Legion baseball, Boys/Girls State, the Oratorical Contest and high school scholarship programs.

For more information about the American Legion or how to become a member, contact the local American Legion Post or visit www.legion.org.
