TitleThe Astronaut with a Song for the Stars: The Story of Dr. Ellen Ochod

Author: Julia Finley Mosca

Illustrator: Daniel Rieley

Interest level: First through third grade

This book is an excellent young reader biography. It is written as a rhyming tale, making it fun to read.

The author, Ms. Mosca, creatively expresses Dr. Ochod’s career plans and how they changed from concert flutist to astronaut as she became an adult. I enjoyed how Dr. Ochod took her first love of classical flute to the stars with her – illustrating that just because people expand their horizons, it does not mean they have to give up other things they love.

TitleDog Breath: The Horrible Trouble with Hally Tosis

Author: Dav Pilkey

Interest level: PreK through first grade

Dav Pilkey, author of Captain Underpants and the Dogman books, once again steps outside the box to give us a reason to roll our eyes and sigh. With a play on words, Mr. Pilkey introduces us to a cute pup named Hally whose owners last name is Tosis. Poor Hally’s breath is so bad her family sadly decides to give the pup away – until her extremely bad breath saves the day.
