Storm shelters will open despite pandemic

Two rounds of severe weather are predicted to hit the Tennessee Valley tomorrow, and storm shelters will be open despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office shared a directive rolled out by FEMA in a post on their Facebook page.

While the directive states that all shelters will be open during the potential for severe weather, it said people who entering will do so at their own risk.

“Please be advised that each shelter may hold up to 98 people. By entering, you are acknowledging that you are aware of and are voluntarily going against the recommendation provided by the Centers for Disease Control for being in groups of 10 or less,” the statement reads.

“We will not be able to guarantee the recommended social distancing of 6 feet or more and will not be able to serve those who are quarantined.”

Morgan County has 20 storm shelters that are open to the public. Pets are not permitted inside the shelters.
