Morgan Co. Tournament: Brewer girls, West Morgan boys get double digit wins

FALKVILLE – Brewer had three players finish in double digits in their 74-52 win over West Morgan in the first round of the Morgan County Tournament.

Hope West, last year’s MVP, led the Lady Patriots with 24 points. Evaiah Burrows had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Jacie Andrews added 11 points.

Brewer jumped out to a 23-8 lead in the first quarter. They hit five three-pointers with West connecting on three of them.

The Lady Patriots continued to extend their lead in the second as they outscored West Morgan 21-13. Brewer held a 44-21 lead at halftime.

Brewer extended their lead to 29 late in the third, 63-34. West Morgan closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 24 going into the final quarter.

“I thought our offense played really well tonight,” said Brewer head coach Jeff Andrews. “We were able to get good looks in the half-court as well as in transition.”

Leisha Steger had six points, six rebounds, and five assists for Brewer, while Gracie Vest added seven points and Pressley Wimberly had six.

West Morgan was led by Jada Gray, who finished with 14 points, while Brandy Hernandez added 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

UP NEXT

Brewer (16-8) advances to the semi-finals to face No. 2 seed Priceville (14-8) on Friday at 6:30 pm at Falkville High School.

Boys

West Morgan 66, Priceville 50 – Dylan Ward came off the bench to lead West Morgan to a 66-50 victory over Priceville at the Morgan County Tournament.

Ward finished with 17 points including 10 straight in the second quarter as the Rebels extended a 2-point first-quarter lead to 14 at halftime. He hit four of West Morgan’s nine made three-pointers.

Trey Summers kept Priceville close in the first quarter with seven of the team’s 11 points. He finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

West Morgan continued to push the tempo and build on their lead in the third quarter. They outscored Priceville by five to lead 54-35 heading into the final quarter.

Ashton Owens added 17 points for West Morgan while Skyler Hutto had 16. Carson Muse pulled down eight rebounds.

Priceville was led by Seth Hood, who finished with 22 points, while Chris Thomas added six points and 12 rebounds.

UP NEXT

West Morgan (12-9) moves on to face the second seed Danville (14-6) on Friday at 7:45 pm at Falkville High School. The teams played last Friday with the Rebels coming away with a 73-61 victory.
