MCSO arrest three for trafficking

Agents with the Morgan County Narcotics Unit arrested three subjects April 17 and seized a large number of synthetic cannabinoids, also known as Spice, K2 or “Synthetic.”

The investigation began when agents received information about drug activity at an apartment complex in the 1800-block of Tower Street in Decatur. While agents were in the area conducting surveillance, they observed a vehicle occupied by a female, later identified as Bridgette LeAnn Williams, 29, pull into the complex. A short time later, another vehicle occupied by a male and female entered the parking lot. Those subjects were later identified as Gary Jermaine Freeman of Decatur and Tracey Lee Campbell, 34, of Hartselle.

As agents continued surveillance on the subjects, they observed what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction. As agents entered the parking lot, a suspect attempted to flee and crashed into an adjacent apartment building. Agents quickly detained the three suspects and ensured that no injuries were sustained during the crash.

A Morgan County Sheriff’s K9 team was called to assist in a plain air search of the vehicles. A canine indicated a positive presence of some type of narcotic within the vehicle and agents recovered a large quantity of a green, leafy substance that tested positive as synthetic cannabinoids/analogs weighing approximately one pound.

Agents then obtained a search warrant for Williams’s residence located in the complex on Tower Street and recovered a suitcase containing a large number of synthetic cannabinoids. The weight was in excess of 10 pounds. The combined weight was approximately 12 pounds, or 5,443 grams, well over the 56-gram threshold Alabama Law requires for a trafficking charge. Also found during the search were three handguns and two AR-style rifles.

A short time later, Agents placed Williams, Campbell and Freeman under arrest for trafficking a synthetic controlled substance-synthetic cannabinoids/analogs. Their bonds were set at $500,000 each. All three were transported to and booked in the Morgan County Jail.
