A long-time Morgan County pharmacist is being honored with a lecture series bearing her name.
The Marie NeSmith Fowler Lectureship was recently established at Samford University. The lectureship was established by Howard Fowler of Hartselle in honor of his wife, a 1948 Samford graduate.
Supporters of the Christian Women's Leadership Center (CWLC) at Samford University gathered recently to celebrate the establishment of the lectureship.
The lectureship fund will support a biennial visiting speaker who will bring special expertise, particularly in areas related to Christianity, women and leadership studies.
"The lectureship will provide new learning opportunities for students and the community to hear from individuals with noted expertise in the areas of Christianity, women and leadership studies who can challenge, inspire and engage us all to expand our thinking and address significant issues of the day," Dr. Carol Ann Vaughn, director of the CWLC, said."We are grateful for such supporters as the Fowlers, who already understand the needs and who are committed to helping address them in positive ways through education."
The Fowler family and other supporters of the CWLC were honored at an April 24 reception in the Rotunda Club at Samford.
After earning her pharmacy degree at Samford, Marie Fowler became the first female registered pharmacist in Blount County. She later owned a pharmacy in Falkville while her husband, Howard, owned a pharmacy in Hartselle.
A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hartselle, she has held leadership positions on many major church committees. She and her husband have a daughter, Karen Howell of Nashville, Tenn., and a son, Dr. Les Fowler of Tuscaloosa; and eight grandchildren.
