Read across America Day observed at local schools

While March 2, 2016 was the National Read Across America Day for this year, many schools celebrated the entire week celebrating reading and Dr. Seuss. This day promotes reading for children each year.

Schools and libraries across the country encourage kids to read and make the week or day a special one. Morgan County and Hartselle Schools were no exception during the Week of Feb. 29 through March 4.  There were special days to dress up for certain characters, schools had special guests come into read and the children were dressing in their favorite Dr. Seuss characters as well. Sparkman School decorated each classroom door to celebrate Dr. Seuss, and Falkville Elementary decorated the gates going into the school. Chad Summerford, Instructional Coach for both schools made the week special for the kids at both campuses.

Crestline Elementary had a special treat to celebrate Dr.Seuss’ birthday. Julie Bone’s Home Economics class at Bob Jones High School baked 435 cupcakes for the school. Her son, Hudson is a second grader at Crestline.

The National Education Association created a day in 1998 to celebrate reading in the United States. March 2 was selected because this was the birthday of Dr. Seuss, who wrote many famous kids books, including “The Cat in the Hat.”

One Pre-k class was even going to serve green eggs and ham to celebrate the famous book and Dr. Seuss.  Even Sam I am decided he could eat green eggs and ham.
