An estimated 50 families, including 125 children, will benefit from the annual Falkville Lions Club Christmas project Sat., Dec. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Falkville Fire Department Building.
“We have 38 families with 102 children signed up now (November 30) but expect that number to reach 50 families with 120 to 125 children by December 19,” said Lions President Terry Nappier. “That’s close to the number of families we helped last year.”
Each family will receive a box of canned food and a ham or turkey. Children will receive gender and age appropriate wrapped gifts.
Nappier said canned goods will come from a recent Channel 48-TV Can-A-Thon and some of the children’s gifts were donated by patrons of M&M Auction in Falkville. Club fundraisers—a golf tournament and ham and turkey shoot– and donations from local churches will take care of other costs.
“Most of the families we help live in the Falkville School District,” Nappier said, “and we rely on school administrators and teachers to lead us to those needing help.”
Refreshments are provided for families as they arrive to pick up their food and gifts. They can choose to take the refreshments with them.
Nappier said Falkville FFA Chapter members have volunteered to help with the distribution of food and gifts.
“Our motto is “We Serve,” Nappier pointed out. “We look for ways to be of service to the community.”
The club offers free eye exams for children and helps sponsor children with diabetes to go to Diabetes Camp.
