Morgan Stinson, a two-year starter on Brewer High School’s volleyball team, signed a volleyball scholarship with Snead State Community College Thursday.
The signing took place at noon in the Randolph Ryan Gym with her parents, high school coach, teammates and senior athletes from other sports in attendance.
Stinson said she chose Snead over Gadsden State “because it’s not such a large college and it’s close to home. Also, when I met the coaches and other student athletes they made me feel like family.”
Stinson was recruited as a defensive specialist after playing at an outside hitter position for the Lady Patriots. As a senior, she led her team in scoring with 351 kills and 372 saves, and had 323 digs and 17 blocks.
“I started thinking seriously about earning a scholarship and playing volleyball at the college level when I was in seventh grade,” Stinson pointed out. “I owe a lot to coach Smith and my travel team coaches for helping me reach this point in my career. I hope I’ll be able to improve my skills enough to earn a scholarship at a four-year college after my sophomore year at Snead.”
She plans to enroll at Snead in August and pursue a major in business.
Coach Smith said Stinson, a two-year starter, brought leadership, hard work, commitment and scoring ability to the Brewer volleyball program.
“She was out best hitter and a person who was fun to be around,” he added. “It was a joy to see her walk out on the court. She is going to be missed.”
Smith said he sees her developing into a quality player at the college level if she continues to improve as she had as a high school varsity player.
“The game will be a little faster,” he added, “but she has the ability and determination to be successful regardless of the circumstances.
“She a leader and a very determined player” is how Snead State assistant volleyball coach Meagan Johnson described Stinson. “She will be a valuable addition to our team no matter what position she plays.”
“We have s11 sophomores graduating and we’ll replace them with freshmen,,” Johnson said.
