High schools receive more honors

It seems like that every time I check my email, I’m getting a recognition for another achievement that local schools and students have received.

Just recently, Hartselle High School was ranked No. 629 in America by The Daily Beast, a news reporting and opinion website. Hartselle features a 92 percent graduation rate with 85 percent of the students going  to college.

The average ACT score is 23. Twenty-four percent of the graduating seniors were enrolled in AP courses. The exam taken rate is also .54 with a passing rate of 21.5 percent.

In addition to that, School Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson said HHS also had 40 AP scholars.

Here is the breakdown of those scholars. There were  23 AP Scholars, students who earned a three or higher on three or more exams.

Nine more were AP Scholars with Honor, students who averaged 3.25 on all scores and scored a 3 or more on four or more exams.

Eight others were named AP Scholars with Distinction, students who averaged 3.5 on all scores and scored a 3 or more on five or more exams.

In addition to that, I just learned yesterday that Hartselle High School has two National Merit Scholar semifinalists. Robin G. Tumlinson and Molly Buffington received this distinction.

I continue to be impressed with the students here locally. And it’s not just at Hartselle High School. Matthew Ellow of Brewer is also the Boys Nation President.

That’s just impressive to have all of these honors in one county.

Congratulations to the students and teachers. Keep up the good work
