Lady Tigers go 1-4 in first week action

Hartselle High School’s ’s volleyball team opened its season against some the state’s top-ranked teams Thursday and Saturday, winning one match and losing four.

The Lady Tigers fell to Class 1A, top-ranked Addison 18-25, 15-25, 25-23 and 14-25 in a home opener Thursday.

Megan Zuck led Hartselle in scoring with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks. Kayla Key scored six kills and five blocks, Katy Beth Bole had five kills, Claire Forsythe had four kills, Jordan Barbrey had 16 assists and seven digs, Hannah Warren had eight digs, Gabrielle Bili had 14 assists and five digs, Cassie Beth Powell had eight digs.

Competing in the Juanita Boddie Tournament at Hoover, the Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season against Spain Park, 25-18, 25-22. They lost to James Clemens in a hard-fought match, 24-26, 24-26, lost to eventual Tournament winner Hoover, 19-25. 34,36, and Huntsville, 17-25, 17-25.

Cumulative tournament scorers for the Lady Tigers were Zuck with 23 kills, 7 aces and 13 digs, Bailey Powell with 15 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Bole with 10 kills, Key with nine kills and four blocks, Madelyn Cheatham with seven kills and three blocks,  Bili with 19 assists and three blocks, Barbrey with 30 assists, Warren with 15 digs and Cassie Beth Powell with 13 digs and three blocks.

“It was our inexperience that hurt us the most,” said head coach Tanya Lybarger. “In the tournament, we played strong against Hoover and came back flat against Huntsville. Finishing strong is something we need to improve.”

The competition won’t get any easier later this week as the Lady Tigers face John Carroll and Walker Thursday. Both are ranked third and fourth, respectively in Class 6A. Harselle is ranked fifth. On top of that, they will compete in the Hutsville Tournament Saturday.
