Somerville to host concert and fireworks

The town of Somerville will host “Concert in the Courthouse Square” and a fireworks show Thurs. July 3 at 6 p.m.

Musical guests include David Dunlap, Wayne Abbott and Freshwater Creek. The concert will last until 8:30 p.m., when the 30-minute fireworks show, sponsored by Somerville Baptist Church, will start.

Vendors will sell hotdogs, hamburgers, popcorn, ice cream and drinks. All proceeds will benefit the preservation of the historic Somerville Courthouse. The 177-year-old courthouse is the oldest courthouse in the state, and it is still used for courtroom proceedings once a month.

The event is part of the “Concert in the Courthouse Square” that has been going on every Tuesday during the summer. Mayor Darren Tucker said these concerts have been doing well with good community participation.

“We normally have a good crowd on Tuesday nights,” Tucker said. “They are very convenient with lots of parking, and they benefit a good cause. We started holding them Tuesdays during the summer about four or five years ago. The entertainers play for free, and all the money made from vendors is able to go straight into the courthouse account.”

This is the second year Somerville has decided to add the fireworks for the Fourth of July. Assistant Clerk Samantha Perdue said the celebration is great for the community.

“We want to allow the Somerville community to celebrate the Fourth of July in Somerville,” Perdue said. “Everyone gets to have a good time and see the historic courthouse. It’s a lot of fun.”
