A five-day basketball camp at Priceville High and Priceville Elementary School concluded on Friday with much-anticipated individual and team competitions as well as the presentation of awards.

Directed by Priceville High head basketball coach Darrell Haynes, the camp attracted nearly 100 campers from grades one through nine. Campers from grades one through four honed their skills at the elementary school gym while grades five through nine worked out at the high school gym.

Coach Donald Weeks directed activities for the young age group. He was assisted by Shane Hopkins, head baseball coach.

Assisting Haynes with the older age group were coaches Mike Green and J. R. Dilbeck. Returning varsity players also assisted with the camp.

“We’ve had a great camp,” said Haynes. “The turnout is greater that what we expected and the kids have learned a lot about basketball and had a lot of fun at the same time.”

“Teaching the fundamentals is what we stress throughout camp,” he added. “We want every kid that participates to take away skills that will help he or she be a better player.” Some will be playing freshman ball next season while others will be competing in youth leagues.

“This is also a good opportunity for our varsity players to elevate their game to a higher level,” Haynes pointed out. “By teaching the game to younger players, they’re learning the game from a different perspective and growing as responsible individuals.

Haynes said campers especially enjoy the last day of camp because they get to compete in free throw and hot shot shooting contests and play three-on-three games for tournament championship honors. Awards are also presented in both age divisions for Best Sportsmanship, Most Improved Player, Greatest Hustle, Best Free Throw Shooter, Best Hot Shot Shooter and Best Overall Camper.
