Tigers struggle in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE – Hartselle struggled in four games against some of the best teams in 5A and 6A during a weekend trip to Huntsville Friday and Saturday.

The weekend featured a rematch of the Class 5A state championship series with Spanish Fort at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.

The Tiger pitching staff couldn’t slow down the Toros in a 12-2 loss, as Spanish Fort racked up 13 hits, leading to 11 runs batted in. That included two triples and three doubles.

Hartselle did get a pair of hits from UAB signee Brett Blackwood. That included a solo home run.

Tyler Cook added a double and a single while Tate Mathis had a single. Curtis Russell drove in Collin Hanners for the other run.

Mason Towers took the loss, allowing 10 runs on eight hits. Of those, only three were earned. Nic James had two strikeouts and Cooper Wright added one strikeout.

Will Luft earned the win for Spanish Fort.

Hazel Green 6, Hartselle 4

Brett Blackwood had a two-run home run to give Hartselle an early 3-2 lead, but six Hartselle errors cost the Tigers the game.

Daniel Conley added a double and single while Tate Mathis had a triple. Tanner Oakes and Hayden Bradford rounded out the hitting. Zeth Malcolm scored twice on two walks drawn.

Tapscott took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Mathis also allowed four unearned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Bob Jones 3, Hartselle 1

Blackwood scored the only run on a solo homer, as the Tigers struggled to string hits together.

Mathis was 3-for-3 including a double, but no one could get him home. Oakes, Conley and Curtis Russell added singles.

Four Tiger errors doomed a two-hit performance for Jake Nelson on the mound. He finished five strikeouts.

Sparkman 7, Hartselle 4

Sparkman scored runs in each of the first three innings before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning.

Casen Wallace the Tigers with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Oakes, Blackwood, Conley, Hanners and Tyler Cook each had one hit.

Brady Wallace took the loss, allowing 10 hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Jake Shelton pitched a perfect sixth inning to give Hartselle a chance in the seventh inning.

Hartselle JV 8, Southside 1

The JV Tigers improved to 10-2, thanks to two-hit performances by Austin Parker, Jack Hundley and Will Foote.

Collin Blackwood, Brady Netherton, Lane Anders and Caley Myers added hits.

Netherton earned the win with 10 strikeouts. Ben Kimbrough had a strikeout in relief.

Hartselle JV 7, Austin 5

Collin Blackwood was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Tigers.

Netherton, Parker, Foote, Anders, Jaxon Peebles and Heath Grimes added hits.

Scout Alexander earned the win with a strikeout. Blake Lowe had two strikeouts.
