‘Couch to 5K’ group prepares for missions race

First United Methodist Church of Hartselle is challenging its members and others to participate in “Couch to 5K,” a two-month physical conditioning blitz that will culminate in a 5k, 8k and one-mile fun Run for the Missions on April 26.

This event is geared in particular for those people who desire to spring back from a bitter cold winter and achieve better health and stronger endurance for the upcoming summer months.

“Couch to 5k” group training began Mon., Feb. 24, at the back entrance to Sparkman Park and will continue on succeeding Mondays until race day on April 26. The pace will be slow at first and will increase gradually. Runners will train the other six days of the week in small groups or individually. Other activities planned on April 26 include inflatables for children, an after-run continental breakfast and reception, door prizes, a deejay, Zumba exercise, Christian music and a video featuring church-sponsored mission work.

The racecourse is designed for a professional race but also a friendly family event with races being certified with chip timers for the novice as well as well-experienced runners looking for a challenging course.

Medals will be awarded to first and second place finishers based on age and gender. You may register on line through Facebook or link to FUMC.

You do not have to be a member of FUMC to join “Couch to 5k.”

All proceeds will benefit three missions to include the Nigerian Project in which 87 Nigerian students have experienced formal education for the first time. The other two are the Jennifer Saunders Orphanage in Kenya and the missionary work of Lee and Gracie Murphree in Honduras.

For more information, you may e-mail newhorizonsfamily@charter.net or call the FUMC office at 256-773-6952.
