City considers closing streets to trucks

The Hartselle City Council considered a resolution to authorize Mayor Don Hall to close certain railroad crossings to truck traffic to prevent another train collision that occurred earlier this month.

Hall said a couple of the railroad crossings he is considering closing truck traffic, which includes all vehicles with three or more axles, at various dangerous crossings including College and Chestnut streets. Both are steep crossings that could cause a tractor-trailer to get stuck on the tracks.

City Council members asked Hall whether trucks were using the crossings during events like Depot Days when Main Street is closed. Police Chief Ron Puckett said tractor-trailers still use the Main Street crossing, but use Railroad and Chestnut Streets to detour around downtown.

In other business, the council:

• discussed an agreement to relocate utilities on Thompson Road for the widening project. The expected cost is projected at $1.4 million at this time, but that will not be included in this year’s budget.

• approved a $655.11 budget adjustment for the fire department for donations received from Pepsi-Cola of Decatur and Fred’s department store of Hartselle.
