Booth to be honored at AlaBCA Awards Banquet

The Alabama Baseball Coaches Association has named Hartselle head coach William Booth the Class 5A Coach of the Year.

Booth won his eighth baseball championship in May, as the Tigers swept Spanish Fort to clinch the title.

The Tigers finished with a 44-15 record.

The AlaBCA will present Booth with his award during the 19th annual AlaBCA Convention Awards Banquet Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Birmingham Mariott Hotel.

Other high school coaches of the year include: Tim Becker, St. Luke’s Episcopal, Mobile (1A); Drew Miller, G.W. Long (2A); Ken Whittle Trinity Presbyterian (3A); Derek Irons, Charles Henderson (4A); and Sean Anderson, Pelham (6A).

Fayetteville’s Jason Kornegay was named assistant coach of the year.

During the awards banquet, Benjamin Russell High School baseball coach Richy Brooks, Vestavia Hills High School baseball coach Tommy Walker, Jacksonville State’s Bill Case and former Wallace-Selma Community College coach Lothian Smallwood will be inducted into the AlaBCA Hall of Fame.

Veteran umpire J.T. Cooper of Mobile will also be honored as the 2014 Distinguished Service Award recipient, announced Barry Dean, executive director of the ALABCA.
