Falkville planning body OKs M-2 zone change

Action taken by Falkville Planning Commission Tuesday night opens the way for Venture Trucking to locate a truck terminal on Buster Road in the northwest corner of the Hwy. 55 and I-65 interchange.

The commission agreed to send a proposed amended zoning ordinance, allowing a truck terminal to operate in a M-2 (light industry) zone, to the town council with a recommendation for approval.

The ordinance could be considered for approval at the next council meeting Feb. 4, following a unanimous vote to suspend the rules.

Two other provisions of the proposed ordinance were discussed by commission members with one being approved and the other rejected.

The commission voted to recommend a section of the ordinance, which would allow the keeping of livestock on two acres or more in a residential zone, subject to the approval of the Board of Zoning Adjustments.

The provision rejected would allow the town council to issue a certificate of occupancy to an applicant in a B-3 zone, with certain conditions.

The commission voted to pass on the entire ordinance to the council, approving the first two sections and not approving the third provision.

Mayor Bob Ramey said Venture anticipates moving 80 trucks daily through the proposed terminal while using Love’s Travel Center as a supplier of diesel fuel as well as other purchase. Fuel and sales tax revenue for the town is estimated at about $40,000 per year.
