County offices up for election

The drumbeats of local politicians could barely be heard in 2013, but that will change soon thanks to the advent of another election year.

The New Year puts a spotlight on 12 Morgan County offices up for election. They are: district judge, places 1 and 2, sheriff, coroner, license commissioner, revenue commissioner, Morgan County superintendent of education, county commissioners, districts 1 and 2 and county board of education, districts 1, 3 and 6.

In addition, this is the final year in the terms of State Senator Arthur Orr, R-Decatur and State Representative Ed Henry, R-Hartselle. Both have announced they will seek reelection.

Four candidates have already filed paperwork with the Morgan County Probate Office, according to deputy chief clerk Joann Wotton. They are Sheriff Ana Franklin has declared her intent to seek another term as sheriff; Randy Vest for another term as District 2 Commissioner, Carolyn Wallace for license commissioner and Robert Irvin for district 2 commissioner. All four are Republicans.

Wallace is currently serving as a member of the Morgan County School Board, representing the Danville area. Sue Baker Roan, a Democrat from Hartselle is the incumbent license commissioner. She hasn’t said publicly whether or not she will seek re-election.

Irvin is a newcomer to politics.

Wotton said county candidates are required by law to file with the Probate Office when they receive campaign contributions totaling $1,000.

Voters will go to the polls on Tues., July 3, to vote for Republican and Democratic nominees in a Primary Election. A run-off, if needed, is scheduled for Tues., July 15. Party nominees, if opposed, will be subject to the Nov. 4, 2014, General Election.

Morgan County Republican and Democratic Executive committees will announce candidate-qualifying dates in the near future.
