Devils fall in 2nd round

Falkville’s amazing football season came to an end Friday night, as the Blue Devils fell to Hubbertville 50-14 at home in the second round of the playoffs.

The Blue Devils (9-2) fell behind 14-7 after the first quarter. The Lions (10-2) were the first to get on the board at the 5:33 mark on a three-yard run by Landon Miller and the extra point was added by Tyler Benton. The score came after initially fumbling on their opening drive and FHS recovered, but turned the ball over on downs four short plays later.

FHS replied on their next drive, following a 42-yard carry by Hunter Woodall ,for a touchdown and the extra point was added by Ryan Sullivan.

The Lions would move the ball 60 yards over the next two minutes and score again on a 49-yard carry by Tommy Pratt. Benton was true on his extra point and the Lions would lead again 14-7.

Early into the second quarter after Falkville’s defense forced a Hubbertville punt, Blue Devil Lucas Johnson was able to block it for Falkville, giving the offense the ball on the Lions 18-yard line. Even with the short field, Falkville could not score following a goal-line stand on the one-yard line.

The Lions took over on downs and went on to move the ball 99 yards, scoring with 1:03 to play in the first half on a 10-yard carry by Pratt. Benton added the extra point and Hubbertville then led 21-7.

In the opening play of the following Falkville offensive drive, the Blue Devils’ pass was picked off and returned to the FHS 24-yard line. The Lions scored two plays later on a three yard carry by Benton. His extra point was partially blocked and the Lions led Falkville 27-7 at the half.

Falkville had the ball to start the second half. Capping a seven-play, 2:14 drive, Hunter Woodall walked into the end zone on a one-yard carry. Sullivan was true on his extra point attempt and FHS lessened the Lions lead 27 to14.

However, this would be the last time Falkville would put points on the board.

The Lions scored at the 5:39 mark on a 54-yard pass play from Timothy Benton to James Palmer. Benton’s two-point conversion was also successful, sending the score 35-14.

A couple of FHS punts and big Lion defensive stops allowed Hubbertville’s offense to stay on the field.

Benton would fumble into the end zone on their next drive and fall on it for a Lion touchdown and his two-point conversion was successful. Hubbertville then led 43-14.

The last Lion score came in at the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter on a one-yard keeper by Benton. He also added the PAT and the Lions went on to win 50-14.

FHS finished the night with 290 total offensive yards. The Blue Devils managed 278 rushing yards on 25 carries. Hunter Woodall managed 17 of those carries for 158 yards.

Shawn Mears grabbed nine tackles in the game while Zach Garrison had six, Lucas Johnson, Colin Eason and Hunter Woodall each had four.
