Rogers attends Navy reunion

Lewie and Peggy Rogers of Johnson’s Chapel community returned home Fri., Nov. 1, after attending Lewie’s Navy reunion of the crews of destroyer U.S.S. Waldron 699 in New Orleans, La., Oct. 23-27. Most of the reunion events were at the Airport Holiday Inn. Peggy, their daughter, Pam Chaffin and husband Doug and daughter Evie also enjoyed some of the activities. They found the World War II Museum especially interesting. Evie’s favorite was the Swamp tour. Lewie and two other WWII veterans were the only attendees from that time period. The U.S.S. Waldron was in the battles in the Pacific from 1941 in WWII through the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. The ship’s nickname “The Bloody W” came from its involvement in the battle of Midway. It was taken out of service in 1973. (Lewie says he plans to attend next year’s reunion in October in Tampa, Fla.) The finale for the event was the main program and banquet on Oct. 27 at Petra’s Restaurant in La Place, La., near New Orleans. The Navy veterans enjoyed sharing their stories both humorous and sad. Many brought photo albums and scrapbooks so wives and families learned a lot of history from the event as well.
