An extension of the apron at Hartselle Airport is taking place this week under contract to Reed Contracting Services of Huntsville.

The project involves grade preparation and a four-inch asphalt surface of a graveled area that is three-quarters of an acre in size.

The project is under contract for $274,730. A cost-share grant from the Federal Aviation Agency is tasking care of 90 per cent of the cost. Hartselle’s five percent local match is $16,500.

Jeff Johnson, director of Hartselle’s Department of Development, said the graveled lot, which is located south of the airport’s terminal, has been an issue with pilots in the past because of the gravel and grit that is stirred up when the engines of their planes are running.

“Paving will solve that problem,” he pointed out. “and it should general more revenue for the airport.”

Shell hangars were removed from the apron to make way for the construction work and will be moved back when the project is completed.

Johnson said 30 working days were allotted for the project.
