A look back at homecoming

Last Friday was homecoming for the Falkville Blue Devils – a successful one since the football team remained undefeated by beating the Donoho Falcons by a convincing 30-13 score.

This week, it is Hartselle’s turn as a series of homecoming events that began Monday will climax with the game against West Point Friday at 7. Homecoming has been celebrated locally for about three-quarters of a century.

Nov. 3, 1939 – MCHS kept on winning football games tonight as they beat the Cullman Bearcats 32-7. This was the first time the local school has celebrated “homecoming.”

Nov. 11, 1942 – MCTS won its homecoming football game over Trenholm High of Tuscumbia 6-0.

Nov. 5, 1945 – The Morgan Boys, after having played one of their best games this season the last time out, will take on a strong Florence eleven here tomorrow night at homecoming. Coaches Long and Pettey have been occupied this week helping the men correct errors made last week.

Oct. 14, 1955 – Judy Hartselle will reign as homecoming queen when the MCHS Tigers meet the Falkville Blue Devils this Friday night. She will be escorted by Robert Parker. The juniors picked as their favorite a lovely gal with brown hair and blue eyes, Joy Sue Gibson. She will be escorted by Jimmy Edwards. Those who wish to take cars in the parade are advised to turn in their names and car keys to Student Council President Nancy Jo Burleson.

Nov. 2, 1956 – Martha Lynn Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Roberts, reigned today at both the parade and the football game as homecoming queen when the MCHS Tigers met the powerful Arabian Knights. Martha Lynn will be escorted by Leonard Burns. She was crowned “Queen Martha Lynn” by Tiger Co-Captains Karl Estes and Frankie Dean. The Queen’s court included Betty Wagnon escorted by Bowes Channel, Shirley Garrison escorted by Mike Roberts, and Dare Sims, escorted by Skipper Drinkard. The football team tied the powerful Arab eleven by a score of 6-6. The Tigers led right up until the last minutes of the contest and would have won had not powerful Fullback Jan Davis thrown his weight into the affair with a last-minute TD. The special guests of the homecoming this year were members of the football team of 1949. The team that year won three games while losing seven.

Sept. 26, 1958 – “Homecoming 1958” was undoubtedly the best MCHS has ever had. With the enthusiastic participation of every student at Morgan County High everything – the parade, the game, and the dance – was a tremendous success.

Oct. 20, 2006 – This is homecoming week at Hartselle High with the usual activities including a big parade and multiple decorations. Football Coach Bob Godsey’s Tigers are 6-1 and are matched against a team with an equal record, J. O. Johnson High.

Oct. 16, 2009 – The Hartselle High band performed exceptionally well at this afternoon’s homecoming pep rally. One spectator said the band was the loudest he had ever heard. Tonight’s game was played in increasing cold weather but it also went like local fans wanted it to as the Tigers defeated the Lee Generals.

Sept. 30, 2010 – Tomorrow is the climax of homecoming week at Hartselle High. It is also the one packed with the most activities. Students will come to school in homecoming shirts or in attire adopted as a theme by their classes. Lawn decorations will be judged at 8 at J. P. Cain Stadium. The competition among the guys to be homecoming king will highlight lunchtime. A pep rally which is certain to be boisterous will be held at 2. The main event is the game against West Point at 7. Between halves the homecoming queen will be crowned.
