Three Danville residents were arrested and charged with lying to Morgan County sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday.

Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin reported in a press release that Louis Hill and Evelyn Marie Belmont each were charged with giving a false report and rendering a false alarm and Gaythle Hill was charged with hindering prosecution in the second degree.

All three were remanded to the Morgan County Jail and later released under a $300 bond each.

The charges stem from separate reports of a stolen car and an assault deputies received from Louis Hill and Marie Belmont on Sat., Sept. 21.

Belmont reported that a 2002 Ford Taurus was stolen from her home at 56 Betterton Drive and later the same day she reported that her husband, Louis Hill, had been assaulted at the same address.

Deputy Sheriff Brian Langham responded to both reports. On Mon., Sept. 23, Sergeants Chad Smith and Perry Shands of the Criminal Investigation Division followed up on the reports. When they arrived at the Betterton Road address, the “stolen” Taurus was parked in the driveway. Louis Hill told the deputies his brother, Gaythle Hill, had found the vehicle in Winston County on County Road 41 and returned it to him

The vehicle had damage consistent with a collision. They

then checked the location where the vehicle was allegedly found and found no evidence that a vehicle had been run off the road at that location.

There were numerous indications that both reports were false. After re-interviewing the suspects, all three admitted to making false reports and statements to the officers.

Louis Hill had been drinking and left his residence in the Taurus. He returned on foot later. When his wife asked him where the car was, he told her it was down the road in a field and to call the sheriff’s office and report it stolen. She complied. He later enlisted his brother to lie to investigating officers about finding the vehicle in Winston County.
