Southern States Danville store closing July 25

Southern States Cooperative Inc. announced Monday it is closing all eight of its retail stores in Alabama, including the Danville location, effective Thurs., July 25.

The store has five full-time employees and has operated under the ownership of Southern States Cooperative since 1998.

The company is looking for someone to purchase the property and continue to offer its product lines to farm operators in Morgan and Lawrence counties, according to Steve Patterson, vice president of communications and marketing.

“We have staff there now talking to prospective dealers,” Patterson said.

“We have reorganized our wholesale crops division, with 67 retail stores in 13 high-volume agronomy districts, to form a new agronomy business unit,” said Tom Scribner, Southern States president and CEO. “Our new growth strategy will enable us to be more streamlined and efficient from sourcing products to application in our farmers’ fields. For years Southern States has been organized around wholesale and retail business units. To ensure we create great customer experiences, we are aligning our infrastructure and associates to meet the evolving needs of our farmer producers and rural lifestyle customers.”

Southern States stores in Athens, Cullman, Centre, Geraldine, Headland, Henager and Oneonta are also closing.
