Funeral for Mary Dell Weatherford Slack, 83, of Hartselle was Tue., Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Blackmon officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Hartselle Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Slack died Sun., Oct. 17, 2010, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born June 7, 1927, in Forrest County, Miss. to E.L. Weatherford and Lela Cagle Weatherford.
The eldest of four children, she was an achiever and graduated from high school at age 15 and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Randolph Slack Jr. and they had three children.
She and her husband were committed to God and to each other and served faithfully in the Gospel ministry for 56 years, the pastorate of nine Southern Baptist Churches, as well as several years as Morgan County Associational Missionaries.
At her death, she had been widowed three years. She became a sought after speaker for women’s organizations and annual missions and Bible study meetings throughout North Alabama. She served with the Alabama State WMU and devoted her life to church work through Bible teaching, singing, playing piano and doing mission work. She was a member of East Highland Baptist Church.  In addition to her church work, she worked as a legal secretary, first for Sen. Bob Gilchrist in Hartselle and later for Caddell, Shanks, Harris, Moores and Murphree law firm in Decatur. Additionally, she served on the Mental Health Association of Morgan County for several years.
She is survived by a son, Robert Edward Slack and wife Shirley of Hartselle; two daughters, Martha Dell Slack Mooney and husband Mike of Decatur and Sue Ann Slack Hayes and husband Bill of Hartselle; a brother, Dr. Sidney Weatherford Jr. and wife Martha of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a sister, Betty Weatherford McKenzie and husband Dewey of LaGrange, Ga.; nieces and nephews; a grandson-in-law, Chris Campbell; soon to be grandson-in-law, Jon Putnam; five grandchildren, Robert Slack, Jessica Mooney Putnam, Alex Mooney, Marianne Hayes and Erin Hayes; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Putnam, Sophie Putnam and Connor Putnam.
Mrs. Slack was lovingly cared for by her family and Hospice of North Alabama. She loved and was especially grateful to Amanda Stewart, Patsy Self, Reba Cantrell, Nelda Knight and Tommie Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of North Alabama Foundation or to the building fund of East Highland Baptist Church.
