Priceville Elementary School is soliciting long distance runners to participate in the first 5K Retro Run at Midnight, the proceeds from which will be used to purchase new technology and other teaching aids for kindergarten classrooms.
The event will be kicked off promptly at midnight and staged on the football field track behind the school.
The competition is open to both male and female runners in 12 separate age divisions.
Awards will be presented to runners with best times in each division. Plus, T-shirts will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
The entry fee is $20 for runners who pre-register prior to Nov. 2 and $25 for those who register later. The school will accept registrations on the bus rider side of the parking lot Nov. 4 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. and in the rotunda beside the main office Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“We’ve gotten no money from the state for technology, library enhancement or common classroom purchases for the past two years and we missed out on the federal stimulus money for technology because we don’t have enough students on free and reduced-price lunches,” Principal Dr. Anne Knowlton said.
“At the same time, we recognize how important it is for our students to have access to up-to-date technology.
“That’s why our teachers and parents put their heads together and came up with the idea of sponsoring a 5K run as a fundraiser.”
Last year, the first grade sponsored a golf tournament and raised enough money to purchase smart boards and projectors.  Knowlton said kindergarten classes have projectors but need smart boards.
“Hopefully, this fund-raiser will enable us to meet that need.”
