Twenty-six Girls Scout, ranging in age from 6 to 14 and representing six of Hartselle’s 12 troops, attended a day camp at Sparkman Park in Hartselle on Thursday and Friday.

The camp opened each day at 9 a.m. and continued until 3 p.m.

A wide array of activities was featured under a luau theme. They included Hawaiian games, trail hikes, outdoor cooking, crafts and fun-time activities.

Instruction was provided by 15 adult and teenage volunteers.

”The big thing about day camp is the hands-on experience it affords Girl Scouts who have not been able to attend resident camps,” said Brantley Kirk, community development manager for the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama. “They get to do a lot of things in an outdoor setting that they might not otherwise get to do. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to make new friends and have fun.”

“The camp was not limited to Girl Scouts who live in Hartselle,” she added. “This year we had two in camp who live in Arab.”

The scouts rotated from one activity to another every 30 minutes. They also had water and snack breaks.

An unusual but enjoyable snack was enjoyed by the girls at a mid-morning break on the first day of camp. Various fruits, including strawberries, grapes and apple slices were distributed to the girls and they used them to make fruit kabobs.
