Katie Gentle of Hartselle, a former all-state softball player for Hartselle’s Lady Tigers, played a major role in helping the Wallace State Community College Lady Lions win their second NJCAA Division I softball championship in St. George, Utah on Saturday.

The sophomore outfielder was named to the All-Tournament Team based on her performance against five opponents in the title run.

She knocked in two runs with a single in the title game, a 7-3 decision over Salt Lake City, Utah, had a two-run homer in an opening round game against Santa Fe, Fla., and a two-run home run and a two-RBI single against top-seeded Butler in a winner’s bracket game on Thursday.

“Katie had a bad tournament out here last year and said it was not going to happen again,” said WSCC coach Jayne Clem. “She made up her mind she was going to have a strong tournament and she was as good as her word. It takes a total team effort to win at this level. We had players picking their teammates. Everybody contributed.”

Gentle wrapped up her junior college career by collecting 17 homers and a team high 71 RBIs.
