Sept. 30, 1960-The MCHS football Tigers were ungracious hosts to Deshler of Tuscumbia tonight at Sherrill Stadium, beating the visiting team by the convincing score of 25-12.
Sept. 30, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Stone are currently vacationing at Gulf Shores.
Sept. 30, 1960-A total of 1,677 students are enrolled in local schools for the 1960-1961 academic year. Last year 1,536 enrolled. In terms of numbers at the three schools, MCHS has 731, Hartselle Elementary 653, and Crestline 293 students.
Sept. 30, 1960-Max Merrill is currently enrolled at the UA Dental School in Birmingham.
Oct. 1, 1960-Faculty and students alike honored MCHS Principal J. C. Pettey today on his 56th birthday.
Oct. 1, 1960-Merchants will give cash prizes at a Hartselle Christmas festival currently being planned. This will be a departure from the recent past practice of giving a new car. Cash will be awarded on three different occasions-December 9, 16, and 24. The general chairman of the holiday festival is Horace Roberts and the co-chairman is Paul Lee. The parade committee is composed of Sam Martin, John Reynolds, and Joe Roberts.
Oct. 2, 1960-Morgan County Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten reports that the county school system owes banks $180,000, which had to be borrowed to keep schools operating. At one time the debt was $260,000. “This is what proration has done to us,” according to Mr. Wooten. Most of the borrowed money (76.3 percent) is being spent on teachers’ salaries.
Oct. 2, 1960-Arlo Abercrombie has received a Civitan International citation by being named the outstanding club secretary in Civitan.
Oct. 3, 1960-The Morgan County Board of Registrars is in session today to sign up those wishing to participate in next month’s presidential election.
One must go to the courthouse in Decatur to get this done.
Oct. 3, 1960-Ellen Allen has been selected as associate editor of The Gargoyle, the campus newspaper at Huntingdon College where she is a senior.
Oct. 4, 1960—The calendar sale sponsored annually by the Hartselle Elementary School PTA began today. Mrs. Leeman Gibson and Mrs. C. L. Orr are co-chairs of the calendar drive this year.
Oct. 4, 1960-United Fund plans for the upcoming fundraising campaign are taking shape. Hugh F. Penn is chairman of the Hartselle drive. The merchants unit is headed by John Reynolds, manager of Elmore’s. Raymon J. Baker will lead the industrial unit and Lamar N. Speake the professional and financial unit. Other unit heads include Mrs. Jo Chandler, Charles Rutledge, and Prof. I. F. Stallworth. Since he has the largest territory to cover, Rutledge will have the assistance of Dorman Pope, J. C. Johnson, Leo Pettit, Chet Dodson, Harvey Pickens, Horace Roberts, J. T. Cobb, Buddy Rodgers and Doc Francis.
Oct. 5, 1960-Plans for expansion of the Hartselle water works have now been completed. When implemented the present plant’s capacity will be doubled to 1,600,000 gallons per day. The improvement will be financed by bonds issued by the city water board.
Oct. 5, 1960-Seventy-three Hartselle-area young men and women are attending colleges or universities this fall. The largest number, 16, are enrolled at Florence State College. The state’s two largest institutions, the University of Alabama and Auburn University, have 12 and 7 students from Hartselle, respectively.
Oct. 6, 1960-Mrs. L. H. (Letha) Houston celebrated her birthday today with friends and family at her home on Milner Street.
Oct. 6, 1960-Sandra Minor has been elected president of Girl Scout Troop 196.
