Colbert County starts fast, cruises to win over Hawks

LEIGHTON – The Colbert County Indians scored early and often on their way to a convincing 58-28 win over the Danville Hawks last Friday
Offense, defense and special teams each contributed points as the Indians raced to a 40-7 lead midway through the second period.
Colbert County took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on a 2-yard Jaylon Hampton run, a 15-yard Brandon Berry-to Cornelius Allman-pass and a 30-yard interception return by LaNarius Willingham.
The second period saw Colbert County extend its lead to 46-21. The Indians scored on a 50-yard run by Jaylon Garner, a 6-yard run by Berry and kick returns of 79 and 86 yards by Tommy Mercer and Willingham.
Danville’s touchdowns came on Clint McAbee’s 94-yard kick return and passes of 25 and 16 yards by Caleb Hill.
Hill’s passes went to Trey Jones and Lawrence Jacko, respectively. Jacko’s catch came on a 4th-and-13 play late in the 1st half.
Colbert County would score late in the third quarter to go up 52-21.
The Indian touchdown came on a 15-yard run by Ryan Carpenter. The two teams traded touchdowns in the final period with Colbert County’s T. J. Freeman racing 79 yards for the Indians and Danville’s Justin Hannah ending the scoring on a 7-yard run.
With the loss, Danvile drops to 1-2 in the region and 1-3 overall. Colbert County moves to 2-1 in the region and 2-2 overall.
The Hawks step out of region play tomorrow night as they entertain county rival Priceville for homecoming.
The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
