HHS Alumni lay brick walkway at new school
Hartselle High School students and teachers may walk on a path paved by alumni when begin classes on the new campus Monday.
The Hartselle High School Alumni Association installed a brick walkway Thursday with 230 engraved bricks.
“We have bricks dedicated to current and former students of Hartselle High School and the former Morgan County High School,” said Tresa McGhee, president of the alumni association. “Some bricks represents generations of families that have attended or are attending Hartselle High School.”
She also said there are some bricks just have sayings on them, but most of them are students or alumni.
Three of the bricks also represent a special friendship, which began at Hartselle High School many years ago. Joe Cook, Horace Broom and Bill Smith had never met before they attended Morgan County High School.
By the time they graduated high school in 1945, they were best friends.
“Two of them had already passed away, but Mr. Smith wanted to commemorate their friendship by purchasing those three bricks,” McGhee said. “That’s probably the most unique story that I’ve heard.”
McGhee said they will continue to add brick walkways around the school. In addition, there will be a donor wall inside the building.
“We had to cut it off at 230 so we could get the bricks ordered in time for the first day of school,” McGhee said. “We come back in about six months and add more bricks. And once this area is full, we have room to add more walkways.”
