Four face drug charges during weekend traffic stops

Morgan County Sheriff’s deputies and Morgan County Drug Task Force Agents have arrested several suspects in connection with several drug cases over the weekend.

Morgan County Deputy Anthony Coburn made a traffic stop on a pickup truck on Alabama 36 East and Herman Bailey Road in the Cotaco area. When Coburn Made contact with the driver, 29-year-old Matthew Teague, Deputy Coburn noticed his passenger, James Hurshel Thompson Jr., who is currently out on bond for methamphetamine related offences and had out standing warrants for his arrest. Thompson was placed in custody on the outstanding warrant.

Deputy Kristen Barnett investigated the vehicle using her K-9 unit, which alerted for the presence of narcotics. Deputies discovered in a tool bag a box of cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine, liquid drain opener, Drano, coffee filters, cold packs, lighter fluid and a plastic bottle fashioned into a HCL gas generator.

Thompson and Teague were both arrested and charged with unlawful manufacturing a controlled substance in the second degree and felony unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Both suspects were transported to the Morgan County Jail, where each is facing an $8,000 bond. Mr. Thompson is also being held without bond on the outstanding warrant.

Task force agents responded to Morgan City on U.S. 231 after Deputy Tyler Watson stopped a vehicle for speeding. Watson obtained permission from the driver to search the vehicle and spotted a plastic bag containing several small white round pills identified as morphine in the center console of the vehicle.

Occupants of the vehicle were identified as Christopher Raines, 26, and Kristie Dean, 22.

Several hypodermic syringes, multiple cut straws with residue in Dean’s purse and several small white round pills identified as Dilaudid 4mg, which Dean had been concealed in her bra.

Raines was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (morphine). Dean was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (Dilaudid) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Raines is facing a bond of $2,500.00 while Dean’s bond was set at $2,800.
