Atkins earns statewide award

Syble Atkins with her award.

After more than 37 years at the Morgan County courthouse, Syble Atkins has been honored by her peers as the 2010 County Administrator of the Year. This is the second annual ACAA award for Alabama County Administrator of the Year.
Atkins was appointed administrator in 2006 by Chairman John Glasscock. As county administrator, Atkins directs the county’s executive management team, implements county policies, runs day-to-day operations of the county administrative offices, works with elected officials, and serves as a liaison for the county commission and staff.
Atkins was truly surprised when they announced her name as the award winner.
“This award was one of the highlights of my career because the people I work with, the chairman, commiss-ioners, office staff and department heads made it happen. It is so rewarding to know people around you care so much about you. I am so grateful for all of them. They make my job easy,” Atkins said.
ACAA officials said she has the reputation of putting the county’s interest first and for providing a steady hand of leadership for those in the commission office. She presently serves as secretary/treasurer for Morgan County Community Corrections and Court Services and is a member of the ACCA Workers Compensation Board of Trustees.
Sonny Brasfield, Executive Director for ACCA said “Success in the position of County Administrator is measured, more often than not, by dedication and the ability to ‘learn on the job,’. There is no secret manual for being county administrator, no school you can attend. You succeed if you can learn on the job, if you love your county and if you are dedicated to the community. And Syble Atkins is a wonderful example of all three traits. It was a pleasure to see her rewarded for the outstanding work she has done for so long.”
