Danville may have shot their fewest number of 3-pointers for the entire 2012-2013 season against Good Hope Saturday night, but it was still enough.

Tabetha Hutto had the go-ahead basket with six seconds left in the game, and eighth grader Tara Tuck iced the game with free throws moments later, helping Danville defeat Good Hope 44-42 to win the Class 3A, Area 13 championship.

The Lady Hawks will now host Cordova on Thursday night for a chance to go back to the Class 3A Northwest Regional for the fourth time in nine years.

Danville coach Paul Wilson called timeout with 10.3 seconds left in the game and the game tied at 40-40 to draw up a play. After Good Hope followed it up with a timeout of its own, the Lady Hawks changed the play.

“We were hoping to get Tabetha open at the goal for a wide open layup, but that didn’t happen initially,” Wilson said. “They were double teaming Sydni (Shelton) and they were pressuring the ball on Tuck. Tabetha was initially covered, so Sydni got the ball on the inbounds pass and threw it to Charlee Anderson, who was open. When they came to double team her, that left Tabetha wide open. Charlee passed the ball to Tabetha and she put it in the basket with six seconds left.”

Good Hope called a timeout with four seconds left to set up a play of its own. However, the horn sounded during the play, confusing the Lady Raiders and causing them to throw the ball out of bounds.

After about five minutes of discussion, Danville was awarded the ball since the referees did not acknowledge the buzzer to stop play.

Tuck was fouled and calmly hit the free throws to give Danville a four-point advantage.

On the ensuing possession, Wilson called his team over to stand in front of the bench, allowing Good Hope to score an easy lay-up as time expired.

“I think I may have invented the basketball victory formation,” Wilson joked. “We let them have the basket because we didn’t want to risk a foul in that situation.

“I’m just so proud of our team. We start an eighth grader and ninth graders while Good Hope starts all seniors. We weren’t able to beat them in the regular season this year or last year. So this was sweet for our team.”

Sydni Shelton led the team with 16 points and five blocks followed by Gracie George with 13 points.

Hutto finished with seven while Tuck had four points, four rebounds and seven assists.

Jesse Oliver and Kellee Stiles both had two points apiece.
