Danville’s Hawks lived up to their billing as the number one seed in the Class 3A, Area 13 Basketball Tournament by defeating number four seed Good Hope, 51-40, on their home court Friday night.

The win secured the Hawks (18-11) a pairing against Hanceville (5-21) in the final Monday night. Hanceville advanced with a 58-52 opening round win over Vinemont.

The Hawks scored the game’s first seven points and held an 11-7 advantage after the first period. They never trailed in the contest, leading 20-10 at halftime and 37-23 after three periods.

“I thought we brought a lot of energy to the game early and that enabled us to get the lead,” said head coach Scott Ellis, “but later on we lost our mental focus and couldn’t get our shots to fall.”

“But I’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss anytime,” he added.

We have as lot of parity in this area.” Ellis pointed out. ”In spite of the fact that we were able to beat them in our two previous games, they (Good Hope) battled us all the way.”

Justin Morgan had the hot shooting hand for the Hawks as he scored 17 points. Alan

Cordova followed with 12 points, Andres Cordova pulled down 13 rebounds to go with his three points, Patrick Doherty scored five points and had five rebounds and Justin Tomlinson scored five points, and had six rebounds and two steals.

Alex Cofer led Good Hope with 22 points and Andrew Cofer followed with nine points.
