No. 10 Falkville girls clinch area title

Falkville’s Lady Blue Devils sealed the regular season area title and will host the area tournament, after beating Decatur Heritage 45-36 on Friday.
Leading the scoring for Falkville (17-1) was Autumn Eddy with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Devils were behind at halftime 23-22. However, Sydney Moore had the hot hand in the second half, hitting two 3-pointers in the third quarter, both at key times to regain the lead 33-31 after the third period.
Another big trey by Moore with 6:45 to play put the Devils up 36-31.
Moore finished with 11 points. Amanda Muse and Emily Mickelson both had seven points. Lizzie Davis and Bailey Anders both finished with four points and Makenzie Smith added a free throw.
Falkville’s boy’s team fell in overtime to the Eagles.
After trailing in the first and third quarters, the Blue Devils fought back in a low-scoring game against the Eagles but came up short in overtime, losing 43-36. The Eagles and Devils were tied at halftime 15-15 and forged a comeback late in the fourth quarter after a long-range 3-pointer by Canaan Smith, who also led the Blue Devils in scoring with 13 points and nine rebounds.
A drive to the basket with 1.1 seconds left in regulation by Aaron Estes drew a foul with Falkville trailing 31-30. Estes sank one of the two free throws, sending the Blue Devils into overtime. The Eagles outscored Falkville in the OT period 12-5.
Estes had 10 points and six rebounds on the night.
Trevor Blackwood added five points, Nate Drinkard finished with four, Clay Austill and Travis Cole added two points each.
Both Falkville teams will play Danville at home on Jan. 28.
Falkville girls 54, Meek 37
The Lady Blue Devils started the game on an 11-0 run and never lost the lead. Up 22-5 after the first quarter and 37-15 at halftime, Falkville was able to let all 10 players see playing time on the court. Eight of them contributed points.
Autumn Eddy led the Blue Devils with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Patricia Kilgore managed 11 points. Sydney Moore hit three treys and finished the night with nine points.
Other scorers for the Blue Devils were Emily Mickleson with seven points, Lizzie Davis with four and Amanda Muse, Bailey Anders and Makenzie Smith with two points each.
Falkville boys pick up area win
The Falkville boys’ team (6-8) also defended their home territory, by defeating Meek 62-39.
Aaron Estes led the scoring with 18 points, seven rebounds and 10 steals. Clay Austill finished with 10 points and four assists. Luke Randolph had eight points while Canaan Smith added seven points and seven rebounds. Both Travis Cole and Hayden Blevins managed six points. Trevor Blackwood added a trey, and Nate Drinkard and Caleb Anders each had two points.
Falkville sweeps Addison in area play
Falkville’s boys and girls basketball teams secured wins against the Addison Bulldogs.
The Lady Devils won big 72-32, maintaining their winning steak and improving to 16-1 on the season.
Sydney Moore led the scoring with 16 points, three of which were 3-pointers. Emily Mickelson came up with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Makenzie Smith, Bailey Anders and Autumn Eddy, all of whom are freshmen, each added 11 points. Patricia Kilgore finished with six points and Katelyn Boyer added a 3-pointer.
The varsity boys (7-8) also finished with a win 62-45 over Addison.
Leading the Blue Devils with a double-double was Aaron Estes with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Blackwood hit a pair of 3-pointers and managed 11 points on the night. Canaan Smith had 10 points and six rebounds. Nate Drinkard had eight points. Travis Cole managed five and both Clay Austill and Hayden Blevins added four points.
