School board grants tenure to 12

Hartselle School Board granted tenure to 12 teachers and voted not to renew the contracts of three others at its regular meeting Monday night.
Tenure, effective with the 2010-11 school year, was awarded to Dyroma Burroughs, language arts teacher at Hartselle High; Annie Lemons, language arts teacher at Hartselle High; Kenneth Lopez, counselor at Hartselle High; Christy Radford, language arts teacher at Hartselle High; David Robinson, librarian at Hartselle High; Terri Preuitt, special education teacher at F.E. Burleson Elementary; Brooke Pettey, third grade teacher at F.E. Burleson Elementary;  Cynthia Averitt, sixth grade teacher at Hartselle Junior High; Robin Riley, Special education teacher at Hartselle Junior High; Christy Paulos, counselor at Hartselle High; Jennifer Burks, sixth grade teacher at Hartselle Junior High; and Shane Russell, eighth grade teacher at Hartselle Junior High.
The non-renewal of contracts, effective at the end of the 2009-10 school year, was approved for Keith Thrasher, a part-time teacher and ninth grade basketball coach at Hartselle High; Chella Stanley, music teacher at Crestline Elementary; and Lori Lott, a fifth grade teacher at F.E. Burleson Elementary School.
Contracts were extended for three years, effective July 1 through June 30, 2013, for Susan Hayes, principal at Barkley Bridge Elementary; Sherry Calvert, principal at F.E. Burleson Elementary; Robin Varwig, principal at Crestline Elementary School; Don Pouncey, principal at Hartselle Junior High; Jeff Hyche, principal at Hartselle High; and Sarita Tapscott, certified school financial officer at the central office.
In addition, the contract of Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed was extended for a three-year period, effective through June 2015, and the job title of Dr. Nancy Horton was changed from director of instruction to assistant superintendent.
Employment was approved for Sylvia Teague, a part-time math teacher at Hartselle High for next school year; Lane Hampton, certified teacher for the summer extended school program for special needs students, effective June 15 through July 15, 2010; and Lisa Witherspoon, a teacher aide assistant for the summer extended school year program, effective June 15 through July 15.
Resignations, effective at the end of the 2009-10 school year, were approved as follows: Jan Garner (retirement), a history teacher at Hartselle High; Mary Gem Johnson (retirement), a physical education teacher at Hartselle High; Peggy Booth (retirement), a cosmetology teacher at Hartselle High; Jeanette Naylor (retirement), a cafeteria worker at F.E. Burleson Elementary; Karen Pendley, a cafeteria worker at Hartselle High; Gary Bell, a track coach at Hartselle Junior High; Dyroma Burroughs, dance team coach at Hartselle Junior High; Cindy Matthews, girls’ soccer coach at Hartselle High; and Leanne Huddleston, reading coach at F.E. Burleson.
Transfers, effective with the 2010-11 school year, were approved as follows: Jonathan Bragwell, from fourth grade to fifth grade teacher at F.E. Burleson Elementary; Vicki Blankenship, from fifth grade teacher at Crestline Elementary to sixth grade math teacher at Hartselle Junior High; Casie Kimbrell, from fourth grade to kindergarten at Crestline Elementary; Elisa Harris, from gifted teacher at Barkley Bridge Elementary to gifted teacher at Hartselle Junior High; Kim Jared, from a third grade teacher at Barkley Bridge Elementary to  a gifted teacher at  Barkley Bridge; Tanya Lybarger, from a math teacher at Hartselle High to a physical  education teacher at Hartselle High; Sandra Schmidt, from an educational interpreter at the central office to an instructional aide at the central office; and Teresa Thrasher, from a special education teacher at Barkley Bridge Elementary to a special education teacher at Hartselle Junior High.
Leave requests were approved for Kara Johnson, school nurse at Hartselle Junior High, effective for the 2010-11 school year and Michael Powell, custodian at Hartselle High, for unpaid medical leave after all personal leave, sick leave and vacation days are depleted, effective May 19 until July 16.
